Christmas Events in Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most sought after cities in Spain and is often regarded as a leading tourist spot in Europe.

By virtue of being the second largest city in Spain and the capital city of Catalonia province, Bracelona gleaming on the shores of the Mediterranean Coast has no less than 4.5 km of beach space to flaunt.

Tourists flock in thousands, every year to lay their eyes on the magnificient edifices of modernist architecture and bask in the golden sandy beaches of the city.

But it would probably be an icing on the cake if you could be a part of the home grown festivities while holidaying in Barcelona. Christmas is the time for fun and merriment. If you have decided to spend your this year's Christmas in Barcelona you have loads of surprises waiting for you. Here we have shortlisted the names and significance of some of the most popular festivities and ceremonies that make Barcelona proud during the festive season.

Epiphany happens to be one of the most popular of the street parades that is celebrated throughout the city on the 6th of January. Carnival in Barcelona primarily associated with parades with floats, Concerts in Plaza Catluña (though Sitges on the coast is regarded as the best) and costumed revelers constitutes a delightful experience.

If you are a shopaholic and the in vogue fashion statements are too much for you to resist, you would be most delighted to attend the Christmas fairs commonly referred to as the Fiesta de Santa Llúcia which takes place around the mid of December in many different venues including Plaça de la Seu, Plaça Sant Jaume just to name a few. It is mainly celebrated in honor of Saint Lucia and Craft and traditional holiday items are the main draws.

Festival of the Three Wise Men or Fiesta Del Reis normally held on January 5-6 is mainly meant for children. It starts with storytelling and recitals on the three wise men, followed by a slow parade through the city streets on wonderfully set up floats and maidens in elaborate costumes. Unlike the traditional Christmas when gifts are handed over to kids on the morning of Christmas, Spanish children receive presents during this auspicious occasion.

Setmana Santa is the pre-Easter celebration when Special services and processions mark the holiday.

If you are a music freak, don't miss out on the International Jazz Festival held between October to December where famous jazz greats like Bebo Valdés, Diego "el Cigala", Janson Mora and even upcoming Spanish jazz groups set the stage on fire in the Sala Luz de Gas, at the Auditorio Nacional as well as at the Palau de la Música.
